Enjoying the Countryside – Autumn and Winter 2011/12

Here is our full programme of activities and events for Autumn and Winter 2011/12:

Saturday 5th November 2011
 “Both sides of the Monnow from Skenfrith”
11.00am (approx 3.5 hours)
Join us for this 6.25 mile (10km) walk following the English and Welsh sides of the River Monnow from Skenfrith to Tregate bridge. Pass Llanrothal Court and Church and enjoy fantastic views over Skenfrith village on your return. Assistance dogs only please. Bring a packed lunch and a drink. Lots of stiles and one steep slope. There is no charge for this activity.
Skenfrith village is on the B4521. Meet outside the castle (SO 457 202). Postcode NP7 8UG.

Saturday 12th November 2011 
“Trees a jolly good fellow at Llandogo School”
10.30am to 12.30pm
Find out how to measure the height and age of trees, how a tree works and why they are special. Have a go at leaf and bark rubbings and making a collage. There is no charge for this activity. Please wear suitable footwear and bring a waterproof coat.

Family event – children to be accompanied by an adult. A “barrier free” activity. Accessible toilet on site. Assistance dogs only please. In door facilities if wet.

Llandogo is on the A466 between Monmouth and Chepstow. Park in the parking spaces next to the School and village hall in the housing estate on the Monmouth end of the village (SO 526 042). Postcode NP25 4SY.

Sunday 20th November 2011
“Piercefield and Penterry”
11.00am (Approx 3.5 hours)
On this 5 mile (8 km) walk you will follow part of the 18th Century tourist trail through Piercefield Estate and ascend the 365 steps to the “Eagle’s Nest” view point with fantastic views down the Wye Valley to the Severn. You will also pass an ancient church and hill fort on your return to St. Arvans. Bring your own packed lunch and a drink. Dogs on short leads permitted. 12 stiles. One steep flight of metal steps and steep rocky path up 365 steps. There is no charge for this activity. Wear boots or stout shoes and bring waterproof clothing.

Meet in the car park behind the Memorial Hall (ST 527 972) on the main road (A466) through St. Arvans, near to the village shop. Postcode NP16 6DN.

Sunday 4th  December 2011
“The wonders of Wentwood”
10.30am (Approx 4 hours)
On this 7 mile (11.25km)  walk you will ascend Grey Hill, with its ancient standing stones to enjoy outstanding views across the River Severn and south Monmouthshire. You will continue down into the secluded Cwm Valley, before ascending again to follow tracks and bridleways through Wentwood Forest. Lots of stiles and 2 steep slopes. Assistance dogs only please. Bring your own packed lunch and a drink. There is no charge for this activity.
Meet at the Foresters Oaks car park in Wentwood (SO 428 938).

Sunday 18th December 2011
“ Llanover to the Goose and Cuckoo”
Start time: 10.30am (Approx 5 hours)
On this 7.5mile (12km) walk we will visit Llanover Church and pass through Llanover Estate before climbing to reach the Goose and Cuckoo pub. We will return via fields, canal and lanes with great views over Abergavenny and the Skirrid Mountain. Lots of stiles and several steep slopes. Bring your own packed lunch and a drink. Assistance dogs only please. There is no charge for this activity.

Sunday 18th December 2011
Old Station, Tintern
“Breakfast with Santa at the Old Station, Tintern”
10.00am to 11.00am
Come and join Santa for a special Christmas breakfast at the Old Station. The event consists of a magician entertaining the children at the table, a breakfast consisting of chipolatas, scrambled eggs and baked beans, toast and marmalade/jam, fresh fruit, fruit juice, Fromage Frais and a visit to Santa’s grotto with a quality present (bought after discussion with parent.) Up to two parents/guardians per child can have tea/filter coffee free of charge during breakfast.

Only children for breakfast, adults are encouraged to remain in attendance. Limited spaces available so booking essential. Cost £15.00 per child.

If you do not want the breakfast, Santa will be in his grotto for the rest of the day until 4.00pm. So why not come along to see him? Cost £3.00 per child, including quality present.

Tintern Abbey along the A466 towards Monmouth. Postcode NP16 7NX.

Saturday 7th January 2012
“Over the hill to Cwmcarvan”
10.30am (Approx 4 hours)
On this 5 mile (8 km) walk you will start at Mitchel Troy village and ascend via a steep footpath to Craig y Dorth Hill from where you will enjoy some of the most magnificent views over the Black Mountains and north Monmouthshire. You will continue down into the next valley before ascending to Cwmcarvan church. Your return route will be back over the other side of Craig y Dorth Hill, through fields and lanes with more fantastic views.
Lots of stiles and 3 steep slopes. Bring your own packed lunch and a drink. Assistance dogs only please. There is no charge for this activity.

Meet at the car park next to the church in Mitchel Troy village (SO 492 104). Postcode NP25 4HT.

Programme Essentials

To get the most enjoyment from our events please wear clothing and footwear to suit the likely ground and weather conditions.

Leaders will always turn up but may cancel due to adverse weather conditions.

Where indicated some events are promoted as “barrier free” this means no stiles or steps, and any gates will be suitable for electric pavement scooter and double width pushchair users.
